Prince George’s Council Looks to Divide Grant Funds
County executive is seeking to allocate funding to grant programs in public safety departments.
The County Council is looking to divide up grant money aimed at offsetting cuts to departments throughout Prince George’s County.
During Tuesday’s council meeting, County Executive Rushern L. Baker’s office introduced a motion to allocate more than $7 million in funds from the federal and state government to the county’s police department, department of housing and community development, social services, soil conservation, fire/EMS, and office of homeland security among others.
Baker has been a strong proponent of increasing funding to public safety departments in the county. In all, county police, fire/EMS and homeland security would receive nearly $4 million in additional funding.

What health as everyone forgotten about the nurses, therapist, counselors, who are included along with fire and the police when there is an emergency. Without replenishment of this workforce the county leaves itself venerable. There is no way the County will hire a nurse for 36000 that's less than the opening salary for a fire freighter I. Retention and recruitment of a highly trained Healthcare workforce is imperative in preparation of county, state and national emergencies. You will need nurse etc. to leave their famalies and provide the specalized care that no other profession can provide. Nurse long have not been included in the area as Public Safety but let a disater occur and you will see Nurse working along with fire and the police providing care and leadership, but so often left out of the equation. There is a shortage of nurses in the county and somebody needs to start paying attention and addressing this concern also!
