County Board of Education May Exclude Student Member from Executive Sessions
The Prince George's Board of Education is considering excluding its student member from executive sessions.
The Prince George’s County Board of Education may bar its student member from attending executive sessions, according to The Washington Post.
Those in support of the move say there is certain information the student shouldn’t have access to, while others question whether the board has the authority to exclude the student.
In August, the Shabnam Ahmed, a rising senior at Bowie High School will succeed the incumbent student member. Her sister Raaheela Ahmed, a rising sophomore at the University of Maryland, is challenging the current board chairman in the fall, making the matter politically sensitive, The Washington Post reports.
The change was discussed last week, but it’s unclear when the board will make its final vote.

Should the student board member be allowed to know what's going on in executive session?

Only in cases of individual student and/or staff related issues should the student be excused from the executive sessions, otherwise, student should be allowed to attend. I feel this is some sort of "pouting and I will fix those young students" tactic to disallow any student from serving on what is a learning and rewarding experience. You can't continue to have a Board that, from my opinion, is too political and self-centered to make the decisions without student input. In addition, I think the Board does not like the fact that they are being challenged by product of PGCPS and UM college student. Some egos are a little hurt but imagine how they will be if the college student wins. If I lived in County...she would have my vote and then fight to assist this smart, bright, and dedicated student who is being denied because of some paperwork issues??? Come on!!!
