Update: Pedestrian ID'ed in Fatal Accident

A driver in Fort Washington struck a pedestrian on the sidewalk, but did not flee the scene, according to police.

Update, 5:20 p.m.: Police have identified the Fort Washington man that died after he was struck by a car Thursday morning as 46 year-old Terraine Saunders, of the 9100 block of Little Stone Drive in Fort Washington.

Original Post: A driver fell asleep at the wheel in Fort Washington, MD, Thursday morning and jumped a curb, hitting a man on the sidewalk, according to Cpl. Maria McKinney, a Prince George's County Police spokeswoman. The victim was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead, McKinney said.

Around 6:30 a.m. officers responded to the 9200 block of Livingston Road and found the man suffering from injuries related to the collision, McKinney said. A preliminary investigation showed that the driver of a green Subaru jumped a curb after he fell asleep and his vehicle left the roadway, according to McKinney.

He struck one of two pedestrians on the sidewalk, McKinney said. The second pedestrian was not injured. The driver stayed on the scene. It appears that neither speed, alcohol nor drugs are factors in this investigation, McKinney said.

This is the second pedestrian fatality in Prince George's County in around 12 hours, the other occurred in Greenbelt Wednesday night.
