O’Malley: People Will Die
Gov. Martin O’Malley urged Marylanders to stay inside for the next 36 hours and said the storm will take lives as it moves through Maryland.
Gov. Martin O’Malley said Marylanders will die as Hurricane Sandy moves through the state.
“The days ahead are going to be very difficult,” he said in a press conference at Maryland Emergency Management Agency headquarters in Reisterstown Monday morning. “There will be people who will die and are killed in the storm.”
He urged residents to stay off the roads and stay inside for the next 24 to 36 hours.
High winds are anticipated for the Baltimore-Washington area by the early afternoon, O’Malley said. He expects power outages to start this afternoon and this evening.
“There will be many trees that will go down and there will be many power lines that will go down,” he said.
The storm has intensified in the past 12 hours, the governor said.
“She’s going to sit on top of Maryland and beat on Maryland for 24 to 36 hours,” he said.
The tidal surge that was thought to be minor will be major as winds push water into the Chesapeake Bay. Tributaries of the bay will flood when the winds combine with the falling rain, and the governor anticipates having to close the Bay Bridge, he said.
“We’ll see overflows in ways we haven’t seen since Hurricane Gloria, or even Hurricane Agnes,” O’Malley said, referring to storms in 1985 and 1972, respectively.
Twenty-three shelters are open and activated, but the governor reminded Marylanders these shelters are for residents who will likely be displaced by the storm.
As the storm moves north, O’Malley is concerned about stress on the Conowingo Dam and tributaries into the Susquehanna, and said that the sediment being pumped into the Chesapeake Bay could become a long-term environmental concern.

The so called Governor is now predicting that lives will be lost because of this storm, just another one of his bogus lies again. This guy has a nerve telling people they will die, who in the hell does he think he is. I'm sure there will be fatalities but what gives him the right to predictions about death, I am so sick of this bum who will be running for a higher position in government in the future. Take heed of this guy as I don't like him and the things he has done to Maryland.

I think you miss the rhyme of the reason. The significance is sometimes overlooked by some macho types in storms like this. I feel the gov just wanted to try and warn those type people and did not intend to sound so morbid. This is one storm where individual courage will determine outcome for lives. It now packs the lowest millibar readings of ANY storm in recorded history. Perhaps the choice of words was not the best, but I'm sure the intent was good. This is not a time to pick each other's bones. Lets all pull together here. May God bless all those affected.

Unfortunately, ddbs00 your wish may be granted. This is a very serious storm. There are those who have done good work throughout their lives and are now old and feeble or otherwise invalid who this storm may affect. And they may have wisdom needed by others. Shame some of them may be 'removed from the gene pool'. And God help you when you are older. Hope there are kinder types around you at that time.

BGE onl y raised the rates 50% plus $1 per month fee. Then next year BGE only raised it another 15%. Wow , see only 65% versus 72%.
Here is the deal. You raise a $100 bill by 50%. Now your bill is $150. Then the next year you raise it another 15%. Guess what. You bill is now $172.50. A 72.5% increase. Fuzzy math for you DEMS!!

Maybe if people weren't so stupid as to try to go out in this mess, and risk not only their own life but the lives of others, people wouldn't have to go on TV to scare the crap out of them to get them to stay home. At least he's trying. He had our state in an emergency situation on Friday already, instead of waiting until the disaster happened, way ahead of anyone else. I disagree with Joe though, that the public employees who risk their lives doing their jobs do not deserve any spacial thanks. He has told people to stay home and off the roads during blizzards andwhat happens, people dont heed the warnings and people die.
This is a serious, dangerous storm people need to take seriously. This storm is very probably about to track directly over Cecil county and north eastern harford county very early tuesday morning. The total for Bush doesn't include all of the people, not just ours, that died in Iraq. Hundreds of thousands, aren't you proud TOMMY?
Find a real scandal TOMMY instead of making one up with your FOX friends.

You mean the one where all the Democrats also voted for? The one where the whole world had the very same information given to them? The Iraq war Obama claims he got us out of when Bush had already signed the agreement before he went out of office. The Afghan war that Obama promised we would be out of within 18 months of him being elected. You want me to keep going? You sorry little thing.

Pathetic doesn't begin to describe the politicizing of this story. Also, unfortunately a motorist in Montgomery County, MD died in a storm related accident. I haven't seen any details so I don't know if the motorist was out on a mercy mission (e.g. Helping get hospital workers to/from work) or just made a poor decision. Whatever the case, I am sure the trolls and troglodytes will start turning it into political fodder and making nasty comments abut the deceased. May they rest in peace.

Gov O'Malley and MEMA officials did a great job of managing this STORMs impact on people and property. The Governor warned that Sandy presented a dangerous situation to the people of MD, he caustioned them to stay out of harms way because people could die. And they have died in the past doing stupid things: trees falling on them, kids electocuted from downed wires and people going into dangerous waters. So, yes, lives were saved today. In addition, by cooperating, people did not put others lives in danger. This governor and this govt as well as FEMA and the President did what govt is meant to do: safe guard the common good.

The difference between the two is Bush hired a political hack instead of a professional to be the FEMA administrator after slashing the budget. Romney wants to shut the agency down as do the Republicans by slashing the FEMA budget.

I, for one am proud of O'Malley and BGE. He declared the State of Emergency early and prepared the State for the storm. BGE kept outtages to a minimum. We lost power for only 1 hour yesterday afternoon. It blinked a few times during the evening and night, but we have power.
Now, I wonder about the employers who expect their employees to report for work this morning, even though the state has put travel restrictions on all drivers, except for hospital and public safety workers, until noon.

Bart, you are so right...some of us not employed by the govt. or emergency services are still expected at work regardless of the current situation. Yes, I am grateful to be employed, but in light of Sandy a bit of lenience would be appreciated. I'll be curious to see how many execs are in today...more than likely it will be just the worker bees.

As a matter of fact, the work done by PEPCO, BGE and those who trimmed our trees this summer did help save us from a repeat result of the last big storm. So why not just send our thanks and gratitude for smart planning ahead. I know you may say that is what they get paid for...well there are many folks who get paid to do a job and sadly do very poor jobs indeed. A vote of thanks when a good job is done is not a bad thing.

noooooo not sure PEPCO gets any praise, PEPCO was on like public "probation" about to get locked away should it dare not show effort.
I think what kept our power was our sheer luck in the northern direction Sandy took. A bit more South and it would be us on CNN's headlines.
Still!
A huge Thank you to all the workers out there who prepared us for every scenario whatever company you worked for.

When I heard Governor O'Malley make his statement about death in such a pompous and arrogant manner, I said in my head, "You are not God." Then I promptly turned off the TV. The comment was disrespectful. It was a very poor showing of leadership. I was very concerned particularly for the elderly who may have heard that comment. I personally am grateful for God's protection during and after the storm. There are blessings to be found.

Wow a lot of hate today. Our Governor is finished for higher service in the Fed Govt, his choking at the convention last month secured that deal. However you might want refocus your energy on the Election Tuesday since it is your local Govt. that dictates most of the spending in your counties and really affects your way of life far more than the State or Federal Government. Most of us don't pay attention to these people, if we even know who is running or in charge at all.

Just to prove how stupid O'Malley is, if question 7 passes and PG County voters don't pass the new casino in their county, Marylanders will loose Millions in revenue because of the tax breaks O'Malley has promised in question 7. Oh, and O'Malley hated casinos as Mayor, but can't build them fast enough now. Talk about a flip-flop.

Well folks, O'Malley said people would die as a result of this Storm. They did. 2 in Anne Arundel County that have been mentioned in the News. Also mentioned in the news were a couple of people who would have been dead if it wasn't for the Fire/Rescue Crews that went out in flood water to reach them AFTER THEY WERE STUPID ENOUGH TO DRIVE AROUND A ROADBLOCK AND INTO 3 FEET OF WATER. I'm no fan of the Governor, but this kind of behavior was what he was trying to prevent with his remarks......
