Gov. O'Malley Shows Up in Tampa, Tongue Sharpened
The chairman of the Democratic Governor's Association compares the tone of Chris Christie's keynote at the Republican National Convention to that of Don Rickles' angry humor.
By Matt McNab, Capital News Service
Gov. Martin O'Malley made a surprise appearance in Tampa Tuesday, criticizing Republican candidate Mitt Romney and other high-profile Republicans, leading to a quick, critical response by the state's delegates.
O'Malley appeared at the Democrats' "rapid-response" center just outside the convention's security perimeter at a press conference Tuesday, slamming Romney's economic plan and his record at Bain Capital.
"Romney economics would spell disaster for America's middle class," he said. "Gov. Romney does not have what it takes to grow this economy. The lessons he learned as a corporate buyout specialist were not lessons that should be applied to a national economy."
O'Malley, who as chairman of the Democratic Governor's Association has taken a prominent role in this year's campaign, was especially critical of Romney's private sector experience, calling Romney out over a lack of middle class job creation.
"The type of business experience that Mitt Romney has during his time at Bain Capital is not the experience of job creation," he said. "It is not the experience that led to a stronger, growing middle class. It is not the experience that led to job creation on a national scale."
O'Malley also slammed New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Romney's running mate, U.S. Representative Paul Ryan, R-WI, over middle class job creation.
"Tonight you're going to see Chris Christie, a governor who has the fourth worst unemployment rate in the country, giving his angry, Don Rickles keynote," he said, "extolling the virtues of their candidate, Mitt Romney, and holding up as their new face, Congressman Ryan, part of the most unpopular House of Representatives in modern times."
O'Malley's appearance led to members of Maryland's delegation calling an impromptu afternoon press conference, held on a walkway in the Tampa Convention Center.
"Gov. O'Malley crashing our convention is a waste of time," said State Sen. E.J. Pipkin, R-Upper Shore. "And he should not be talking about jobs after the dismal performance over the last few months."
State Senate Minority Leader and U.S. House of Representatives candidate Tony O'Donnell said O'Malley was making "a mockery of the free-enterprise system" in the state.
"The country deserves to know what a fraud O'Malley is," he said. "We have a structural deficit of over $1 billion, we're losing jobs at a higher rate than anyone else in the country and we have an underfunded pension system. There's much to do in our state. The Democratic folks are very desperate to hold on to their national power.
Maryland Republican delegate and New Day Maryland PAC President Charles Lollar agreed.
"It's not a tranquil state at all," he said. "We have a $1 billion deficit and a governor who expects to cover that with revenues from taxes we haven't even seen yet. We're the second-wealthiest state in the country and we still continue to raise taxes."
O'Donnell said O'Malley's presence in Tampa likely would mean a Republican presence in Charlotte for the Democratic National Convention next week, but he does not plan on attending.
"I won't be in Charlotte," he said. "I've got bigger fish to fry running against Steny Hoyer."
O'Malley is set to appear on an MSNBC talk show on Friday alongside Christie.

I'm a Democrat that's feed up with O'Malley. His spends so much time trying to play on the national stage while our state is falling behind, especially when compared to our neighbors in Virginia. They are getting the employers, jobs, and well to do residents, while he's bringing in gambling and spending too much time on tangential publicity generating issues like gay marriage. Meanwhile, our taxes are going up, fees are increasing, and Baltimore is becoming an east coast version of Detroit.

I am disappointed with most of what O'Malley has been quoted to say. The State of Maryland has its share of problems to manage. From the little I know of New Jersey, Governor Christie has proven to balance their budget and have a lower unemployment rate from Maryland. Who will dispute this record? What can the public believe any more?

"Who will dispute this record?"
Uh, me. For starters, NJ's unemployment is one of the worst in the nation (48th, I believe). Christie couldn't be doing a worse job.

MD's unemployment rate is almost 3% lower. It's comparing apples and...rotten apples. Christie is flat awful, especially compared to the likes of O'Malley.

Brigitta--please don't repeat those falsehoods!
New Jersey's constitution requires a balanced budget so he has accomplished nothing he isn't required to do and that every other governor hasn't done before him.
NJ's unemployment rate is HIGHER under Christie than it was under the previous governor--it's now 9.8%. That's also HIGHER than the national rate of 8.3% and HIGHER Maryland's rate of 7%.

I'm also a registered democrat and I see no reason why Omally has to make a junket to Tampa on taxpayer money. He's paid to take care of Maryland and doing a poor job. He's taking care of himself and looking for national media attention. We have problems here that need to be addressed.

Interesting assumption that when Republicans travel it's on their own dime but when Dems travel it's on the taxpayer's dime.
Interesting also that these comments attack the messenger and not the message, which is that the Republicans have no clue about how to create jobs. Oh, well, that's not quite true, by telling corporations that business should only be about maximizing profits, Romney et al have indeed created jobs -- in Asia.

OWEmalley stole from the Maryland taxpayers when he took the money from the transportation fund and moved it to the general fund, to make MD look better on paper. Then, raised our taxes AGAIN, to put the money back into the transportation fund. Isn't it against the MD constitution to "steal" from the transportation fund? Bottom line, MD is anti business, #40 on the business friendly state list. Bottom line, politicians don't create jobs, businesses do. No wonder businesses are moving from MD and going either out of business or to another state, like a business friendly state like VA. MD is estimating losing another 14000 jobs next yr, all in a recession proof area, which is a sad state of affairs. Thank GOD OWEmalley is gone after this term. BTW, I did not see anyone other then this NObama sounding board (the patch) mentioning omalley in Tampa. I guess even the left wing media saw him as a non issue, since they know how that he does not even stand the slightest chance after this term for ANY politics. At least he can go play music at the bars in fells point.

What's pretty clear--regardless of what pool of money bought his ticket--is that he is in Florida, and not Maryland, and is not attending to state affairs like a governor should. Now, you might be in the school of two-wrongs-make-a-right, and think that it's justified because Christie is down there as well. I'll leave that up to the Jerseylicious People to consider.

O'Malley is a fiscal incompetent. O'Malley taxed the millionaires in Maryland and one third of them moved out of the state. O'Malley has raised just about every tax on the books and he still outspends the tax revenue. We have schools where children have classes in mobile trailers while there's always plenty of money to help the illegals who are flooding into our state. O'Malley took the wonderful city of Baltimore and turned it into a ghetto with a high crime rate when he was the mayor. If you like high taxes and a high crime rate, come to O'Malleyland because that's all we have to offer until we can get O'Malley and the rest of his Democrat cronies out of our State. The stench of the Maryland Democratic politics is as overwhelming as the O'Malley taxes.

Once again Theresa, you only believe what the left wing says. Man, that must be some powerful stuff you drink. I guess you are incompetent to look at both sides of the issue and connot see that omalley is worthless and is a natural born NON-leader like the guy in the white house...they should stick with being community association leaders, if they can handle that.
After reading the response from the Tax Foundation, Mr. O’Malley’s spokeswoman Raquel Guillory admitted that "the blog post had been incorrect on Virginia." So I ask, if they falsify that data, how much more are the "tweeking"? I am sure, much of it is false.

"I've spent much time in Baltimore in the past three decades - even lived there briefly - and I can say with certainty that you're nuts."
Lived there briefly, Frank? I grew up in the City. Neither one of us still lives there. The house I grew up in now has bars on the windows and the front door. A man was murdered last year in my old neighborhood. You don't want to walk in Herring Run Park after dark anymore like I did when I was a kid. My cousin who lives in Highlantown is afraid for me to visit her in the City after dark. She lives across from Patterson Park. You have to be careful walking over in that park because of the discarded needles. The school in the next block had a fire truck parked outside of it periodically because the "students" would set fires in the school. The school is now closed. There was a TV show that was filmed in Baltimore for a while. It was called "Homocide on the Streets." The property taxes are the highest in the State. Most of the big named stores have moved out of the down town area into the counties. Baltimore City was a great place to live in the fifties. All the steel plants are now closed. The old Glen L. Martin's plant is a wharehouse and the airfield belongs to the State. We have a lot of government workers living in Maryland. They are just like you, Frank. They don't stay long either. Maryland has been included in the 5 top States not to retire in because of its high taxes and high crime rate.

He criticized Republican office holders for their economic records - failing to mention that every two weeks he writes blogs for outlets like Facebook an the Patch bragging about the job creation engine in Maryland. What he fails to mention is that Maryland has fewer jobs now than a year ago, and recently lost jobs for four straight months - followed by an astounding gain of 800 jobs statewide in the most recent month. He also posts pictures of cranes coming into Baltimore, claiming they will bring jobs - failing to mention that the ship is Chinese, carrying Chinese manufactured cranes, which create jobs in the US - how???? Maybe he ought to dull his tongue.

The fact is that MD will be losing another 14000 jobs next yr. BTW, what the hell are you talking about (more evidence of Republican lies about the big "expansion" of government." You cannot call government jobs as REAL jobs, when it takes 10 government workers for the most part to do one of someone in the private sector. Also, nitwits like OWEmalley don't create jobs, all the do is hinder the process of business. The vast majority of dems have never held a real job or even had to make a payroll. They have not clue. Look at the guy in the white house, the only jobs he has had in the past was a community organizer for ACORN. Again--all of out context. "He also posts pictures of cranes coming into Baltimore, claiming they will bring jobs - failing to mention that the ship is Chinese, carrying Chinese manufactured cranes, which create jobs in the US - how????"
Um, how? Thanks for the link, which again proves a twisting of facts. Where the cranes came from isn't the point. They're increasing the capacity of the port to a degree that can accommodate expanded business way beyond current levels. "Each crane can lift up to 187,340 pounds — more than an empty space shuttle. They run on electricity rather than diesel power.
James White, executive director of the Maryland Port Administration, praised Gov. O'Malley's administration for its role in establishing the public-private partnership and ushering in a new era.
"With the arrival of these supersized cranes, the Port of Baltimore is primed for a new day in its container business ... one that will soon bring larger ships, more cargo, and more employment and economic benefit to this port," White said.

No. The point was "how" were the Chinese cranes meant to spur jobs. Asked and answered. I said thanks for clarifying the source of the cranes. I guess we shouldn've have used to them to better our port even if though they were the only source. Really enlightened thinking.
Doesn't change the fact that it was obvious HOW they would help, but Jim Burnetti was trying to pretend otherwise and twist what O`Malley said. He stands corrected.

Good morning Frank. Thank you for researching the changes that took place with Glen L. Martin. My point is that the Essex plant is closed and maybe if the Democratic government took as much interest in it's business economy as it does with catering to illegal aliens, perhaps Martin would have had a brighter future. Martin also manufactured the civilian Martin M-130 China Clipper, Martin M-156, Martin 2-0-2, Martin 4-0-4. But you are correct in that the majority of Martin's business involved the Federal Gov. and contracts for military aircraft and the aero-space industry.

You always pop up when the race issue is of no concern and you bring it up. Don't forget, NObama is 1/2 white...he is not really black. But then again, his dual race has NOTHING to do with how incompetent he is. Even Joe Biden said “I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy,” he said. “I mean, that’s a storybook, man.” I do beg to differ, there were MANY MORE before him that would run rings around NObama politically.
