College Offering Free Tax Services to County Residents

Low income residents, in Upper Marlboro and beyond, can file their tax refunds for free.

Prince George’s Community College in Largo is looking for local residents to participate in its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program.

Those who participate in the program will receive free electronic filing of state and federal tax returns, and refunds are issued within seven to 10 days with direct deposit.

Under the program, community college students receive training and Internal Revenue Service certification. Free tax preparation will be offered to students, taxpayers with disabilities, elderly residents and those with low and limited income.

“During 2011, our services saved seniors and low-income residents nearly $81,250 of tax preparation fees,” Betty Habershon, director of the Community Financial Center at Prince George’s Community College, said in a statement.

“We are expanding free preparation by partnering with faith-based and nonprofit organizations at sites throughout the county this year," she said.
